The original rubber and cloth covered wires have served out their life expectancy well. But they are wearing thin, exposed and broken in places. In addition every terminal connection needs to inspected and cleaned. All of the terminal connectors on the wiring harness need to be new and clean. Perhaps coated with dielectric grease to reduce the rate of natural corrosion. The visible wires under the hood will be replaced with modern wire wearing a cloth coating to represent the original wire it replaces. Antique style terminal ends will also be used under the hood were possible. All terminal connectors will be soldered and sealed with black heat shrink.
Several resources will be used for reference. The original harness, a large colored coded laminated poster made for this car with its optional parts, as well as my shop manual.
It turns out that there are several areas that the harness could have been customized to a more modern layout. I chose to stick with the original layout completely.
Individual harness' were made for sub circuits and then wired together with main hardware.
Every wire was replaced. The original color was used as often as possible. I hand wrote notes and numbered every wire.
The first step to building a new wiring harness is to collect all the supplies needed.
